A lifetime of service to the cause of human and civil rights, working for equality and social justice at all levels of government.

Al Eisenberg will add to his outstanding record and will continue fighting for human and civil rights in Arlington County.

The Record
  • Recipient, James B. Hunter Human Rights Award. Read the Nomination Statement submitted on behalf of Al Eisenberg. Read his acceptance speech for the award.
  • Recipient, Virginia Partisans achievement award for human rights
  • Leader in the fight for domestic partner benefits
  • Helped write important sections of the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Promoted environmental justice regulations at the U.S. Department of Transportation
  • Fought successfully to overturn prohibitions on mortgage loans for unrelated households by the Virginia Housing Development Authority, and when a Republican Administration restored those prohibitions, continued the fight for lending equality.
  • Created a special Arlington capital program for curb cuts, long before the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Worked successfully for a state hate crimes law in Virginia
  • Promoted increased funding for Fair Housing Boards across the country
  • With Bill Newman, led the creation of the Arlington County Human Rights Commission.
The Future

As the Delegate for the 47th District, Al Eisenberg will continue to work for social justice, by

  • Supporting a living wage
  • Expanding fair housing enforcement, locally and regionally
  • Fighting for reinstatement of domestic partner benefits for county employees
  • Advocating equality in state mortgage lending for unrelated households
  • Ensuring the inclusion of people with disabilities in the process for designing public buildings and facilities
  • Working for inclusion of "sexual orientation" in the categories of protections in state hate crimes law
  • Supporting affirmative action in the hiring of county employees.
