For Release - May 25, 2006

Arlington County , VA -- William J. Howell, Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates has named 47 th District Delegate Al Eisenberg (D-Arlington) to two important State assignments. These assignments are directly related to Delegate Eisenberg's membership on the House of Delegates' Agriculture, Chesapeake, and Natural Resources Committee.

  1. Pursuant to adoption of two House and Senate resolutions, the Speaker has selected Delegate Eisenberg as a member of a joint House-Senate subcommittee to study the long-term funding sources for the purchase of development right to preserve open-space and farmlands. The Commonwealth has lost almost a million acres of forestland and cropland, and another 340,000 acres to development between 1982 and 2000. In addition, 61 percent of sensitive natural areas are unprotected and 50 percent of the State's wetlands have been converted to other uses. Eisenberg noted that available funding will protect these sensitive and essential environmental assets.
  2. Speaker Howell has also appointed Delegate Eisenberg to the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission through 2006. The purpose of the thirteen-member Commission is to prepare for and commemorate the sesquicentennial of Virginia 's participation in the American Civil War. The Commonwealth of Virginia witnessed more American Civil War military engagements on its soil than any other state, and hosts more historic sites related to the American Civil War than any other state

Delegate Eisenberg noted, "I am delighted that the Speaker has appointed me to these two positions, demonstrating that bi-partisanship is an important asset in the governance of the Commonwealth. I thank him for choosing me for these important opportunities to help address the vital need for open space and farmland preservation, and the continued recognition of Virginia 's Civil War history and heritage."
